| Michael S. Nirenberg
(Not Your Typical) Podiatrist
Known as America 's PodiatristSM , his head-scratching, off-beat way of looking at America 's 600 million feet makes him captivating on TV, in print, or in a treatment room. Having treated over 10,000 feet, assisted law enforcement in forensic footwear analysis, published in numerous journals and even discovered a patient's foot pain was due to a tumor in their neck—a one in a million catch that probably saved the patient's life—Dr. Nirenberg is someone you want on your team. When only 11 years old, he performed magic shows for children's birthday parties, instilling him with a sense of showmanship. Today, that showmanship has made him a frequent, in-demand writer and speaker—enlightening doctors and the public on the remarkable human foot in fun, entertaining, and sometimes unconventional ways.
“My greatest joy is teaching,” says Dr. Nirenberg. He has spoken on behalf of hospitals, the Arthritis Foundation, to salon and pedicure schools, law enforcement (including Homeland Security), and at medical and forensic conferences, and for 15 years served as a Podiatric Residency Instructor, teaching new podiatrists the art and science of treating patients.
An accomplished writer, his paper “Forensic Methods and the Podiatric Physician,” published in the Journal of the American Podiatric Medical Association , earned him the prestigious Distinguished Podiatric Writing Award . His work has also appeared in the Journal of Foot Surgery and the renowned Journal of Forensic Identification . He is among a handful of forensic podiatrists in the world—helping convict criminals by their feet and footprints and is a member and serves on the Board of Directors of the American Society of Forensic Podiatry.
Originally, from Toronto , Canada , Dr. Nirenberg came to America in 1987 to study podiatric medicine and stayed here, eventually becoming a full American citizen. He is married to Miriam and has two wonderful, sometimes tormenting, young boys.
Dr. Nirenberg is a member of many medical and forensic associations, serves as Director of Podiatry for a surgical center, holds a Bachelors of Science degree and a Bachelors of Arts degree, and is Board Certified in Podiatric Medicine and Surgery. He practices just outside of Chicago , in Crown Point , Indiana and continues to watch for patients whose foot pain is due to a tumor in their neck or other unusual places.
Dr. Nirenberg's newest passion is writing his weekly column, Ask America's Podiatrist, a fun, educational look at the remarkable human foot, whether it is simply trudging across the bathroom floor, crossing a tightrope, wearing a four-inch stiletto, or doing high impact aerobics. |
